Apps that transform the Travel Industry

1) Splittr
The Story:
When you frequently travel as a group, sometimes you want to split costs among each other or keep track of who’s up to pay next. Splittr lets you break up costs between people and add expenses while on your trip, so you know who’s turn it is to pay. It supports multiple currencies or mix currencies, which is great if you’re taking a client in another country out to dinner. It works offline and there is not registration needed. Also, it lets you print PDF reports, which are particularly useful for submitting expenses to your company.

Dimension of Innovation: What is new?

For whom is it new? How new is it?
It is new for the company.
Travellers, family members, friends and colleagues can use it - so there is a wide range of applications. It is an incremental innovation, as similar payment options exist.

What type of innovation?
Process Innovation and Innovation in Transactions, as it changes the way we pay/receive money.

2) Prioriy Pass

The story:
Sitting around in an airport can be tedious and tiresome, especially if you have a long layover. If you’re looking for a place to work, relax, or grab a cocktail while you wait, then you can use Priority Pass to discover 1300+ lounges in over 800 cities worldwide. It lets you see which ones are available, browse photos and amenities, and has multilingual advisors that can help you out 24/7. Save money on dining, shopping and relaxing and navigate your way around the airport with our NEW Indoor Airport Maps, currently available in 10 major airports. While it does require a paid membership, the annual fee is minimal and worth the amenities that are included - like free alcohol at most of their lounges.

Dimension of Innovation: What is new?

For whom is it new? How new is it?
It started in 1992, when it was new in the market. Since then, several companies have tried the same but as Priority Pass claimes, none could threaten their position as they offer more investment in lounges, resources, processes, technology and partnerships and have more lounges, in more cities, in more countries than any other program. It is an incremental innovation, as it combines the lounges around the world that exist already and is not the only company offering such a service.

The background:
ver 25 years ago our founder watched premium-class airline ticket holders enjoying the exclusivity and tranquility of their airport lounges, as he endured the chaos of the departure hall. His answer was to create Priority Pass – a club that is simultaneously inclusive (affordable to all) and exclusively for those who value a little piece of civilization on their journey. In short, a place where you are always treated like No. 1, rather than part of the herd.
Possible learnings about the innovation process (what does it need to develop an innovation like this?)
To always strive for the better, one needs to invest heavily and find the right target group - the prices are affordable but still in our opinion will mostly appeal to business/frequent travellers which it also states on the website: Priority Pass remains the program of choice for the most discerning independent travelers, corporate customers and global loyalty schemes.
