The story:
The brand kicked off the initiative early
in 2018 by piloting a special package at five hotels for families with young
children that included analog essentials for making memories: a flashlight, an
Instax Polaroid camera, a shadow-puppet book, materials to build blanket forts
and a timed lockbox for parents to stow their phones during family time.
However picture taking with phones is now not possible this can be done with
the Instax instant camera which allows the pictures to be printed in real time.
As a further incentive, families get a 5% discount on the Best Available Rate.
Upon arrival ever family receives an adventure backpack (1 per child with
a max of 2 per family; additional backpacks will be available for purchase) for
days filled with fun. After
their stay, families have the opportunity to continue their phone-free time at
home since the backpack can be taken home. These backpacks include the
following items:
- The Nocturnals: The Mysterious Abductions book
- Bookmark
- Plush fox stuffed animal
- Shadow puppets how-to guide
- One roll of Instax® film
- Activity sheets
- Crayons
Later that year, Wyndham Grand expanded the Reconnected Family Experience. Select hotels created VIP areas at pools and restaurants for guests—in exchange for checking their phones. Wyndham Grand partnered with Yondr, which creates phone-free spaces using a locking phone case, to prevent guests from checking their devices while sitting poolside or enjoying a meal in these VIP areas. Guests who participated in the optional phone-free zones had access to special perks, amenities, and prizes such as 75,000 Wyndham reward bonus points – redeemable for free nights at 8,000+ hotel worldwide.

Product/Process Innovation - the idea of digital detox is not new but this idea has new aspects to it. The idea of getting an incentive for giving up phones and spending time with your kids without technology involved has great potential to be successful. As we can see, the project has had success as they expanded the idea further with the pool areas. It is designed for families and new for the market and company as the idea with the bonus system has not been introduced in such as way on the market. Due to the need for escaping the digitalization, Wyndham introduced this new concept.
