What is new?

The type of lodging, where guests are provided with a separated bed, and it provides showering and eating facilities. It is targeted mainly to business people, who only need a bed and are looking for a budget solution.

For whom is it new?

It is new for everybody, because we are used to hotels, where the guests are provided with a full sized and equipped room.

How new is it?

The first capsule hotel opened in 1979 named Capsule Inn Osaka in Japan, but they only became famous in the last decade, because tourism became a global phenomena and travelling became cheap, safe and accessible for everybody and people don't travel only to have comfort or to rest, but to see the city and the culture of the given place.

What type of innovation?

It is a radical innovation, because they changed the business model of a regular hotel. They are providing the minimum facilities which people need for a short stay for super low prices, and they are usually near to train stations, because their target market are overnight travellers.

What can you find about the background of the innovation?Who was the innovator?Story of the invention? How has it been generated? Possible learnings about the innovation process (what does it need to develop an innovation like this?)

It was invented in and introduced in the late 1970's. Capsule hotels were conceived as a solution to a growing problem in Japan's canters of commerce. Their target market was the 'salaryman' who were working all day in the office and spending their evening in the bar drinking, and they needed a place to sleep. It is a perfect solution for them, because capsule hotels provide a bed to sleep and are a super cheap option. When guests enter the capsule hotels they need to take their shoes off and put on some slippers. Then they are provided with lockers, in which they can put their belongings. They can take a shower in the common bathroom, which is also kept really clean. The bed that they are provided with in 2 meters long and 1,2meters wide, and the capsule which they are sleeping in is 1 meter high. It is now provided with charging facilities for the guests mobile phones as well.
