Air New Zealand trials edible coffee cups to become more eco-friendly

1 What is new? For whom is it new? How new is it?

Air New Zealand has introduced edible coffee cups in order to become more sustainable. Instead of serving more than 8 million cups per year they are reducing the waste by serving the hot drinks in biscuit-based, leak-proof and vanilla-tasting cups. The cups have been a big hit with the customers who have used these and they’ve also started using the cups as dessert bowls.

2 What type of innovation?

The innovation is a product innovation which also affects the customer experience. The innovation could have a really positive impact on the environment while at the same time delivering a really cool and unique customer experience (also good marketing).

3 What can you find about the background of the innovation? Who was the innovator? Story of the invention? How has it been generated?

Air New Zealand has been working in partnership with an innovative New Zealand company called ‘twiice’ to explore the future of edible coffee cup which are practicle in a sense that they are leakproof and tasty so customers will actually end up eating them and not throwing them away.
Twiice is now also working on extending its edible range of crockery and expects it to rollout next year which would reduce the waste even further. This can obviously also be implemented in other industries.
