Gipfelstürmer App - Hiking App Wolfgangsee
Gipfelstürmer App - Hiking App Wolfgangsee
This app was introduced in spring 2017. It is a combination of hiking navigation, hiking pass and provides ideas for hiking tours. The app is available in English and German. The app suggests the closest route, including information about stopovers, route description, length, duration, etc. The app can also be used offline if you have your route selected and started. At the mountain peak or the target destination, the user finds a QR code that can then be scanned and points can be collected. For 100 points you will get a present in one of the Wolfgansee tourism information offices. The app is free of charge and available for android and iPhone users.
Type of Innovation: Innovations in Information Technology & Product Innovation
o Dimension of Intensity - How new?
This app displays an incremental innovation, from manual usage to technological usage. Hiking passes and navigation have existed before in the form of stamps and hiking maps. This innovation uses instead a mobile device where all of those options are included.
o Subjective Dimension - For whom is it new?
It is new for the company, but not for the market. There already exist similar applications in various destinations, for example, the App “Wanderpass Tux-Finkenberg”.
o Dimension of Content - What is new?
The app shows a Product-Innovation as it is a newer, more modern form of the formerly used hiking maps and hiking stamps. It’s a product developed by the DMO of Wolfgangsee in order to give incentives to tourists to choose from a larger variety of hiking routes.
The app “Gipelstürmer” is under ongoing development as there are new routes added by the DMO. It was developed in cooperation with Mogree mobile agreements GmbH, an Austrian software developer. The DMO also offers an alternative to this app, for all those that do not have or do not want to use a smartphone. In this case, they provide a conventional hiking pass that includes nine “easy” routes.
o Possible learnings about the innovation process (what does it need to develop an innovation like this?)
The innovation was a reaction to customer needs. Nowadays nearly every customer has a smartphone with which everything is planned and organized. The offline usage is a top-up for international guests, as due to this there are no issues with roaming and data access.
Furthermore, it is easier for the DMO to update the information available in the mobile application than updating brochures and maps.
