Self-check-in instead of queuing: a&o Hostels bring new check-in technology to Austria
a&o guests have the choice: check-in at the reception, relaxed at the terminal in the lobby or mobile at the smartphone. Also available in Vienna from December.
The goal is to offer the highest possible comfort to our guests. This also means avoiding long waiting times and offering comfortable alternatives. The project underlines the innovative spirit of a&o. Furthermore, the company is currently the only hostel chain with this offer.
The feedback at the first locations is very good and especially at peak times such as weekends, alternatives to the classic check-in are welcome and necessary. In the test runs, check-in at the terminal took an average of only 260 seconds.
In a&o's current 39 hostels, terminals are therefore gradually being installed where you can check in yourself. A similar service has been available at airports for many years. From December 2019, self-check-in will also be available at the a&o Hostel Vienna Central Station in Austria. The other hotels in the chain, including the three Austrian locations Vienna Stadthalle, Graz Hauptbahnhof and Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, are to be upgraded in spring 2020.
In addition to the self-check-in terminals, the a&o hostels are also currently working on the rollout of the mobile check-in including the mobile key. The aim is to check in on the way to the hostel and use the smartphone as a room card. This service is already enjoying great popularity at the first locations.
With its innovations, the company tries to respond to the needs of its customers. For this they have an interdisciplinary team which makes such projects possible as fast as possible thanks to the most different abilities. The self-check-in project could be realized in an incredible six months from the start. The current design relaunch of all a&o locations is also progressing at a rapid pace.
A&o is Europe’s largest hostel provider and stands for inexpensive travel to European metropolises. The budget brand was founded in 2000 and currently operates 35 hotels in 21 cities and six countries. As the largest hostel provider in Europe, a&o is growing at an annual rate of over 15 percent with an average occupancy rate of 66 percent. In the 2018 financial year, a turnover of 152 million euros was generated with 5 million overnight stays (APA-OTS Tourismuspresse, 2019).

The innovation is that there is now also a self-check-in A&O hostel. In principle, the self-check-in is not an innovation, as it has been available at the airport for several years now, where you can check yourself in for your flight and no longer need the help of the airport ground staff.
