Autonomous Travelsuite



The award-winning autonomous travel suite combines the newest transportation technology with the features of a hotel room. Designed by the Canadian design studio Aprilli, this product aims to turn lost hours of travelling into valuable time in which you can be productive or sleep.   The travel suite uses autonomous driving technology and is designed to head for several destinations, mainly on long distances. Its central control unit is composed of a so-called Autonomous Interface where the traveller can enter destinations, for example the own front door. The interface can search for the best and fastest routes to get there and also checks the indoor environment of the vehicle for its functionality. The idea is that these vehicles are being operated by an Autonomous Hotel Chain that disposes of several hotel-like facilities where the vehicles can park in parent units, being completely integrated into the structure of the building. These facilities offer gyms, pools or conference rooms. 






This innovation is currently only a prototype on paper and has not been realized yet. The future market could focus on North America where distances between bigger cities are large and autonomous driving on the rise.

The autonomous travel Suite itself is a radical innovation. However, it is an innovation that combines two already existing ideas – autonomous driving and hotels – aiming to make travelling more time-efficient.

It is new for the company as well as for the market and potential customers. It is the first time that autonomous driving and hotels have been combined and this combination shows high potential for the future.

Dimension of Content - What is new?

As mentioned above, the combination of both autonomous driving and hotels is new and can impact both the market of transportation as well as the tourism and hospitality market, thus being a market innovation.

Possible learnings about the innovation process

This innovation caused a great stir in the public as there is a demand for more flexible workspaces and more efficient use of time, in particular when travelling. Therefore, this innovation has won several awards, for example the Radical Innovation Award 2018. The developers argue that the rental cost of an ATS is about the same as the cost for public transport, but you will be more flexible and have the opportunity to use your time more efficiently. They also suggest that already existing hotel chains can be involved in the development of the autonomous hotel chains and use existing facilities which makes a quick construction of the infrastructure possible. However, the future will show if this idea can be realized and change the way people travel.
